President Trump relaunched his criticism of the federal reserve at a private meeting with its president, Jerome H. Powell, saying Thursday, saying that it was a mistake not to reduce interest rates.
The meeting, which was organized at the request of Mr. Trump, has been the first since the president returned to the White House.
Mr. Powell and Trump discussed the evolution of the economy with regard to inflation, the labor market and growth. The president did not share his expectations in matters of monetary policy, the Fed said in a statement.
He told the president that such decisions “would fully depend on incoming economic information and what it means for the prospects”, according to the press release, and would be “based solely on a prudent, objective and non -political analysis”.
On Thursday, Karoline Leavitt, press secretary of the White House, told journalists that Trump had expressed his conviction to Mr. Powell that the Fed made a mistake by not reducing interest rates.
The meeting arrives at a difficult moment For the economy, which is now faced with a variety of risks from Mr. Trump policies. This has complicated the work of the Fed because it seeks to eliminate the remaining pressures on the prices resulting from the pandemic and contain news that surfaces following prices, while supporting a labor market which began to slow down.
