Trump announces he will unveil his abortion policy on Monday

By James Oliphant

(Reuters) – Donald Trump said he would outline his long-awaited abortion policy on Monday, one he said would be a compromise position likely to inflame both sides of the debate.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform, the Republican presidential candidate said his policies would include exceptions for rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother. Although Trump did not provide further details, it seems likely he will seek a federal ban that is less restrictive than the six-week ban passed in states like Florida and Georgia.

As he has in the past, Trump argued that a more moderate stance on abortion was necessary for Republicans to prevail in November’s presidential and congressional elections.

“(We) must use common sense in realizing that we have an obligation to save our nation, which is currently in serious DECLINE, to WIN ELECTIONS, without which we will have nothing but failure, death and destruction,” Trump wrote.

The regulation of abortion has been a matter left to each state since the U.S. Supreme Court stripped constitutional protection for the procedure in a 2022 ruling. Since securing the Republican nomination, Trump has suffered pressure from anti-abortion groups and others to detail his position.

A proposal less strict than a six-week ban could anger abortion supporters while galvanizing abortion rights groups who have warned that Republicans would seek a federal ban if they take control of the White House and Congress.

Democratic President Joe Biden has made Trump’s opposition to abortion rights a key tenet of his re-election campaign.
