President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia is expected to speak on Monday about the war in Ukraine, in a highly anticipated phone call which occurs in the midst of a wave of diplomatic activities aimed at resolving the three -year conflict.
The call, which, according to Mr. Trump, would take place at 10 a.m. Third telephone conversation known between the two men since the second term of the American president. The first two, which took place in February and March, were celebrated in Moscow in weakening of Western resolution to isolate and punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The Trump administration’s desire to quickly end the fighting has come up against the insistence of the Kremlin to obtain conditions which would mainly be equivalent to the capitulation of Ukraine.
“I hope it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have occurred,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social on Saturday.
Mr. Putin’s spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov confirmed the planned call and said the Kremlin was grateful to American diplomatic efforts. The compliment was the last example of attempts by Russia and Ukraine to influence Mr. Trump with flattery and an effusive language.
“If the political services of the United States – that we appreciate a lot and we are grateful to the American party – if they really help us achieve our objectives with peaceful means, it would indeed be preferable” to the continuation of the war, Peskov told Russian media on Monday.
