Washington (AP) – The Trump Administration has informed the World Food Program and other partners it ended some of the latest humanitarian programs that save their lives through the Middle East, an American official and UN official at the Associated Press said on Monday.
The projects were canceled “for the convenience of the American government” in the direction of Jeremy Lewin, a high -level lieutenant of the Department of efficiency of the government of Trump, Elon Musk, whom the Trump administration appointed to supervise and finish the dismantling of the American agency for international development, according to a letter sent to the partners of the USAID and viewed by the AP.
About 60 letters canceling contracts were sent in last week, notably for major projects with the World Food Program, the world’s largest food aid, said a USAID official. An official of the United Nations in the Middle East said that WFP had received letters of termination for Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
Some of the latest American financing remaining for key programs in Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and the Southern African Nation of Zimbabwe have also been affected, including those who provide food, water, medical care and a shelter for people displaced by the war, said USAID official.
The Trump administration had undertaken to save these most urgent and safeguarded programs in its assistance and development programs by the State Department and USAID.
The Trump administration has already canceled thousands of USAID contracts while dismantling the USAID, which it accuses of waste and advancement of liberal causes.
The newly terminated contracts were among around 900 surviving programs that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had informed the congress he intended to preserve, said the USAID official.
There was no immediate comment from the State Department.
