The Trump administration reviews the program of studies of a sex education program in California for medical accuracy and the relevance of age, a decision that sparked the reactions of LGBTQ + worried defenders for information on queer and transgender sexual health.
Last week, California was invited to submit all the educational materials of its personal responsibility education program funded by the federal government to the administration for children and families of the US Health and Social Services Department, according to a press release from the administration.
The Ministry of Health provides $ 75 million in annual financing to prepare programs across the country. The declared objective of these programs is to prevent the pregnancy of adolescents and sexually transmitted infections.
“As part of our radical transparency efforts, I will make sure that students in the program are taught at age adapted to age and medically precise,” said Andrew Gradison, ATPI -assistant secretary of the ACF, in a statement on the curriculum review.
Jorge Reyes Salinas, spokesperson for LGBTQ + Civil Rights Organization Equality California, described the gradison declaration.
“It is not a question of transparency of the curriculum, it is censorship, simple and simple,” said Salinas to Times. “This survey on California’s preparation program seems to be politically motivated and tries to undermine the inclusive and medically precise sex education services which serve our most vulnerable young people.”
California’s preparation program provides youngest sex education for young people aged 10 to 19, focusing on the achievement of those who are low-income, knowing homeless, in the foster family, in the justice system for minors or identifies themselves as LGBTQ +, according to California Department of Public Health.
The department claims that California’s preparation program has proven to influence young people to delay sexual activity, increase condom or use contraceptives for those who are sexually active and to reduce the number of sexual partners.
Salinas said he thought that the investigation of the study program is a barely veiled attempt to erase the mentions of the transgender community, transgender health care and various gender identities and pronouns.
“All this is part of their political attack calculated against transgender and non-binary people,” he said.
In January, Trump published an executive decree saying that the government would only recognize two sexes, men and women, effectively erasing the federal recognition of transgender people. Its administration has weakened the protections of non-discrimination under the affordable care law, giving health care providers and insurers more latitude to refuse services to transgender persons.
Trump has also challenged a new Californian law which prevents school districts from notifying parents if their child asks to use a different name or pronoun in class.
The attention was drawn to the California’s preparation program last week, when the Daily Mail published an article indicating that its program discussed role games “who have same -sex couples and discuss the use of sexual aid”.
This article was released by Trump’s assistant assistant, Alex Pfeiffer, who declared in an article on X that California “uses taxpayers money to teach children sex toys and role -playing games”. The California Department of Public Health did not immediately respond to a request for comments on the accuracy of this complaint.
Salinas described the commentary as “ridiculous”, saying that the purpose of the California preparation program is to provide precious lessons on abstinence, contraception, sexually transmitted infections and healthy relations and decision -making.
