Trudeau, who has served as prime minister since 2015, acknowledged the support he had received during his tenure, particularly in challenging times. “We have supported each other during the pandemic, for free trade, for climate change, and for Ukraine,” he said during the address. He also reaffirmed his commitment to Canadians, stating, “You all know I am a fighter because I care about Canadians.”
However, despite his efforts, Trudeau noted that the Canadian Parliament had been “paralysed for months,” leading to the decision to step down.
“The fact is, despite my best efforts, Parliament is paralysed for months,” he added.
“I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister after party selects its new leader.”
Trudeau confirmed that he intends to remain in office until a successor is chosen, but his decision to resign as party leader marks a major shift in the country’s political landscape.
This announcement comes at a time when Trudeau’s leadership has faced increasing pressure from within his own party. His resignation will open the door for a new leader as Canada braces for a federal election, which is expected to take place by late October.
