Authorities say the driver of a tractor-trailer crashed into a police vehicle in southwest Michigan, crashed into a home, tried to flee and was fatally shot by a police officer.
ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP, Michigan — The driver of a tractor-trailer crashed into a police vehicle in southwest Michigan, crashed into a home, tried to flee and was fatally shot by a police officer, officials said.
St. Joseph Township officers responded Monday evening to a request to check on the well-being of the 42-year-old driver from Tennessee, who then drove his truck into a police vehicle, state police said State in a message published on social networks.
The truck then traveled a short distance before hitting a house. Police said the driver tried to flee, then got into an altercation with a police officer, who shot him.
The truck driver later died in hospital. His name has not been released.
The officer suffered minor injuries and was placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
St. Joseph Township is approximately 85 miles (137 kilometers) southwest of Grand Rapids.
