Trevor Story remains hopeful for the best after suffering a shoulder injury Friday, but he also knows how serious it could be.

The Red Sox shortstop was emotional as he spoke with reporters after being placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left shoulder subluxation.

“It was a significant injury,” Story said. “It’s just frustrating. It’s not fun, man. It’s no fun getting hurt. I’m going to miss matches. It was a bit of a weird thing. I’m going to miss a little time, that’s for sure.

The injury occurred in the fourth inning of Friday’s Red Sox win over the Angels when Story dove to his right to retrieve a ground ball but landed awkwardly on his shoulder. Story was in immediate pain, lying on the grass behind in the infield for a few moments before leaving the game.

Story had an MRI on Saturday which showed he had a subluxation. But the Red Sox are still in the process of gathering information while waiting to see how long Story might last.

“It’s still too early to speculate on that,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters when asked if it was a season-ending injury for Story. “We are still getting details. I think we’ll know a lot more when he sees the doctor on Monday.

Story will meet with Mass General Brigham’s shoulder specialist Evan O’Donnell on Monday, according to The Boston GlobeIt’s Alex Speier. The Red Sox have seen a few notable players in their system suffer from shoulder subluxations in recent years. Prospect Miguel Bleis had to undergo season-ending surgery after suffering an injury last May.

In a few more positive cases, Jacoby Ellsbury did not need surgery when he suffered his subluxation in 2012, but missed three months. Jonathan Papelbon suffered a subluxation in early September of the 2006 season and was able to restart a few weeks later.

“We’re asking all the questions, while trying to gather all the information and opinions from everyone involved,” Story said. “It’s a significant injury. Yeah, I think we’re kind of waiting to diagnose it before we get all the opinions.

The injury is unfortunately just one of the few setbacks Story suffered after signing a six-year, $140 million contract to come to Boston in 2022. He suffered multiple contusions and only played 94 games games during his first season with the Red Sox. He underwent surgery to repair the UCL in his throwing elbow in January 2023, forcing him to be sidelined until August of last season.

Story finally enjoyed a healthy first offseason in a Red Sox uniform last winter. After a strong spring training, Story and the Red Sox were also optimistic that the shortstop would return to his All-Star form after struggling in his first two seasons with the team.

But these hopes will be put on hold, at least for the moment. Still, Story wishes the best as he awaits answers from further test results.

“I still have hope for that,” Story said when asked if he could return in 2024.
