Transform still water into sparkling in the palm of your hand

SodaStream has been the biggest name in home carbonation for generations, but a revolutionary new water bottle unveiled at CES 2025 hopes you’ll ditch (or upgrade) your countertop soda machine for a more portable way to get your drink fizzy gaseous.

The Roam SodaTop is like a portable SodaStream. It’s in the cap that the magic happens. A leak-proof seal and small CO2 cartridge transform boring plain water into something a little more exciting. You can screw the cap onto a water bottle that Roam itself sells, or onto a compatible water bottle (like a HydroFlask).

Roam plans to start selling the SodaTop directly from its website in the first quarter of 2025, for $50. CO2 cartridges should cost around 70 cents each.

Portable carbonation on the go

The Roam SodaTop process is simple. You insert a CO2 cartridge into the SodaTop’s special lid, release that carbon dioxide into the bottle, let out the excess gas inside, and drink. Each cartridge is suitable for a single liter of water.

Roam claims its stainless steel water bottles are designed to keep drinks cold for 24 hours. If you already own a SodaStream, Roam also has an adapter cap, sold for $13, that allows you to carbonate your drinks from your countertop machine.

The flavor is in the sparkling air

The only thing you need to carbonate in the bottle is the water, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add flavor. Flavored syrups or other drink mixes can be added after the CO2 if you want something that tastes like something. But Roam is also developing its own ways of adding variety.

CEO Sunjay Guleria said the company was working on flavored CO2 cartridges, which would contain the essence of a flavor and allow you to make your own calorie-free sparkling water with just plain water and the cartridge. Imagine flavors of ginger, lemon, yuzu, grapefruit or white peach – natural sparkling water or fresh flavored sparkling water in your own bottle. It’s refreshing.
