Sunday evening, the Golden Globes red carpet featured actor Jonathan Van Ness, star of the Netflix series. strange eyedressed in a glamorous dress alongside transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, nominated in the female performance category for Emile Pérez.
Van Ness wore a flowing green dress with a full beard that sparked mixed reactions online, with some hailing it as a bold affront to gender norms while others saw it as little more than a low blow.
Van Ness, who identifies as non-binary, is not the first man to make a statement by wearing a dress on the red carpet and some users even pointed out that South Park designers Matt Stone and Trey Parker beat it by over 20 years, reminiscent of the 2000s Oscars when they wore the same dresses as Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez.
Also present on the red carpet was transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, a biological male who sparked controversy by landing an acting nomination in the female category.
As Breitbart News reported last year, Jonathan Van Ness faced a wave of allegations accusing him of having “rage issues” and acting like a “monster” while filming his Netflix series. According to rolling stoneseveral sources close to the production detailed the “fear” people felt around Van Ness when he allegedly became angry.
“(There’s) a real emotion of fear around them when they get angry,” the source said, referring to Van Ness by his preferred pronoun “they.”
“It’s almost like a cartoon where it just oozes out of them. It’s intense and scary,” the source added.
Other sources and production members described Van Ness as emotionally “abusive” and “humiliating”, calling him a “nightmare” to work with.
“Jonathan is a person who contains multitudes and has the ability to be very warm, very charismatic, and has the ability to make you feel really special by looking out for you,” a source said. “But at least once a day they should yell at someone.”
“It might be something small, but there will always be someone to point out, blame and make the villain of the day,” the source added.
In an interview with podcast host Dax Shepard last year, Van Ness broke down in tears while discussing the possibility of teenagers changing their gender.
“Some people are very uncomfortable with the adolescent transition,” Shepard said. “They dispute that. “How do we know the person isn’t going to change their mind?” And then there’s another counterargument: “Well, if they commit suicide, then it’s really permanent.” » This is a good counter-argument.
“I could cry because I’m so tired of having to fight for little kids because they just want to be included,” Van Ness said through tears. “I wish people were as passionate about the opportunity for little kids to be included or grow as they are about the fictional equity of women in sports. I must tell you that I am very tired.
