Traces of polio found in Gaza sewage, health ministry says

The Health Ministry announced on Thursday that traces of the polio virus had been detected in sewage samples in Gaza. The Israeli military ordered all soldiers stationed in the Gaza Strip to get vaccinated or receive a booster dose.

The results of the ministry’s tests match those conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Cairo. The ministry said it was monitoring the situation to ensure that the virus does not spread to Israel.

Officials said Wednesday that Israel rebuilding Gaza’s sewer systemwhich was devastated by the war. Repairs will include sewer pipes and treatment plants damaged during the war, causing sewage to overflow.

“Epidemics could easily break out there due to poor hygiene. There are places where sewage pools have dried up and flowed into the sea, but this also poses a danger to our health,” a security official said.

“The Khan Younis municipality has already started dumping sewage into the sea, which could lead to the closure of the beaches of Zikim and Ashkelon in southern Israel. It is a miracle that no disease has spread there. There are piles of garbage next to the running water, and we will deal with this problem,” he said.
