Toto Wolff and Christian Horner clash over Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull – Firstpost

Max Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull until 2028. But Mercedes appear relentless in their pursuit of his services.

Toto Wolff and Christian Horner have reignited their war of words against Max Verstappen after the Mercedes boss hinted at poaching the three-time world champion.

Verstappen’s future at Red Bull has been uncertain since his father, Jos, said the team risked being “torn apart” if Horner remained as its boss.

This follows allegations against Horner of inappropriate behavior towards a female colleague. He denied the allegations and an internal investigation has since cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Verstappen publicly committed his future to Red Bull and vowed to terminate his contract, but after the Dutchman’s dominant victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, Mercedes boss Wolff stirred the pot again.

Wolff told reporters in Shanghai that “everyone is waiting to see what he (Verstappen) is going to do.”

“There are so many factors that play a role for a driver to join,” said Wolff, who is looking to replace seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who is leaving for Ferrari next year.

“Obviously, from the most rational point of view, it’s the fastest car in the hands of the fastest driver,” Wolff said.

“But I don’t think that’s the only reason you stay where you are.”

Wolff admitted he would “love” to sign reigning world champion Verstappen if he becomes available.

His latest comments sparked a response from Horner, who said Wolff should focus on revitalizing Mercedes after a poor start to the season.

“Why would you want to leave this team? » said Horner.

“Mercedes is third behind its customers (McLaren and Aston Martin).

“His time might be better spent focusing on the team rather than the driver market.

“I can assure you that there is no ambiguity about where Max Verstappen will be next year.”
