Tornado touchdown reported in Kankakee County, officials say – NBC Chicago

A series of showers and thunderstorms spawned at least one tornado in Kankakee County Tuesday afternoon, with a second tornado also reported by eyewitnesses.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was confirmed around 1:59 p.m. near Bonfield, a community located 12 miles west of Kankakee.

A trained weather spotter reported the tornado and took a photo, according to NWS officials. There are no immediate reports of damage.

A second tornado was also reported, but has not yet been confirmed by trained weather observers.

A series of showers and thunderstorms hit the southern suburbs Tuesday, bringing the risk of isolated tornadoes, hail and heavy rain, authorities said.

Additional tornadoes could potentially develop as showers continued to show weak rotation on radar.
