Tori Spelling destroyed a potato in last fight with Dean McDermott

In case you missed the monumental news in the annals of celebrity breakups, Tori Spelling ended her long-beleaguered marriage to Dean McDermott by filing for divorce last month.

Now, the former ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ star opens up about the big argument that ultimately caused the couple to split after 18 years of a rocky marriage — which included five children, a public breakup, a reported sex tape , at least one incident of infidelity, as well as continuing reports of drug addiction, financial insolvency, tensions with his extremely wealthy mother, reality TV appearances and brazen efforts to obtain gifts.

But speaking in the second episode of her new podcast, “MisSPELLING,” Spelling also described how a “loaded baked potato” came in handy as she needed a way to express her anger during of their latest marital confrontation, according to People.

Spelling said she and her husband, a former actor, spent the day on a shoot with her “90210” co-star Jennie Garth, People reported. But once they returned home, they started arguing and exchanging insults. Spelling said McDermott made a dig at him that was particularly “hurtful to hear.”

She wouldn’t reveal the insult, but she said it really struck a chord — so much so that she “smashed” a baked potato she was preparing on the kitchen floor with anger, according to People.

“This guttural scream came out of me,” she said. “It was like a beast. It wasn’t pretty at all.

The spelling also doesn’t specify what the potato is “loaded” with, but usually people prepare these potatoes with bits of bacon, sour cream, cheese, maybe some vegetables.

But after destroying her meal, Spelling said she locked herself in the master bedroom of their home, according to People. This is the room where Spelling said she slept, although it was previously reported that the two slept in separate bedrooms.

But McDermott, “excited,” began “banging” on the locked bedroom door. When she didn’t open it, she said he came to a side door that she didn’t lock.

“So he came in and he was very, very upset,” Spelling said. And he said, “I want a divorce.” It’s over.’ And I said, ‘Okay. Great. All right.'”

Spelling said McDermott had “threatened” divorce “a million times” before, People reported. But this time, McDermott showed he meant it by taking to Instagram moments later to say that he and his wife had decided to separate.

“It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that after 18 years together and 5 amazing children, @torispelling and I have decided to go our separate ways and begin our own journey,” he wrote on June 17 . 2023.

Spelling said on her podcast that she didn’t see the message until their 15-year-old daughter, Stella, noticed it, according to People. “My daughter found out first and said, ‘Mom, Dad just posted on social media that you’re getting divorced,'” Spelling said.

When Spelling first looked at the message, she said she had a reaction that surprised her: relief.

“I’m not kidding, guys, I felt like this giant boulder had been lifted off my chest,” Spelling said on his podcast, according to People. “I could take a deep breath and I was like, ‘Oh my God. He said so, so now I’m free. Like, “It all started, and I couldn’t do that. And he did, and now I can move on. He published it, let’s go. Yes. I needed it. You know? Like, I couldn’t do it myself.

Although Spelling felt “free” again, she said she quickly realized her daughter was upset.

“Estella started crying and she said, ‘No, Mom. You act like it’s a good thing,” Spelling said on his podcast. “And I was like, ‘No, no no, but I’m just saying,’ and she was like, ‘Do you know how embarrassing my friends are reading this?’ And then I was like, “Oh my God.” And I felt so ashamed again. And I was like, “Oh, no. I didn’t think of things that way. I was just like, I’m free. And she said, ‘He needs to take this down.’

Anyone who has followed the many ways Spelling and McDermott have embarrassed each other over the years might wonder why their daughter was particularly upset by this news. For example, the couple’s relationship began when they worked together on a TV movie in 2005 – and both were married to other people.

In November, McDermott went to the Daily Mail to detail the problems in their marriage, including Spelling’s desire to keep a pig and several dogs in their bedroom and how their problems “got worse because we stopped sleeping in the same room”. The actor, who has struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for decades, spent the summer in rehab.

But, as Spelling said, when she contacted McDermott, she said he didn’t understand their daughter’s concerns.

“He said to me, ‘You don’t understand. This has been a long time coming,” Spelling said on his podcast. He said, “You know, Mom and I are going to co-parent everything. »

“And she said to me, ‘Dad, you don’t understand. It’s not about that,” Spelling recalled on his podcast. The girl said, “You guys can get a divorce.” You should, but you just made it public before we dealt with it. This should not be the case.

Eventually, McDermott realized his announcement was premature and withdrew it, Spelling said. He then went to rehab, while she and their five children packed up and left the house and “never went back.” As well as Stella, the couple share Liam, 17, Hattie, 12, Finn, 11, and Beau, 7.

Spelling officially filed for divorce last month, citing irreconcilable differences. Minutes after filling out the paperwork, she also began recording the first episode of her podcast, the Los Angeles Times reported. The episode began with Spelling leaving McDermott a voicemail asking him to call her back.

Later in the podcast, she shared a recording of her side of the conversation when McDermott returned her call and seemingly explained why she should be the one to file the case first.
