Top Stories | D-Street’s winning streak, Sovereign Wealth Fund talks, Congress vs SEBI chief, ‘IC814’ series controversy and more

It’s the 13th day of gains on Dalal Street as Sensex and Nifty mark their longest ever winning streak, albeit with limited gains as bulls consolidate at record levels. In a CNBC-TV18 exclusive, the Centre has initiated preliminary discussions with the RBI and SEBI to amend the rules to allow setting up of a sovereign wealth fund with sources saying a $5 billion fund can create investment opportunities worth $10 billion every year. Meanwhile, the Congress party has levelled fresh allegations of conflict of interest against SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch, accusing her of drawing remuneration worth nearly Rs 17 crore from ICICI Bank while she was employed by the market regulator. ICICI Bank responded by saying that it had not paid any salary or granted any ESOP to Buch after his retirement other than retirement benefits and that all payments were made to him during his employment phase with the ICICI Group. Amid the ongoing controversy over the web series ‘IC814’, the government has summoned Netflix’s chief content officer, likely to seek an explanation over the depiction of terrorist figures in the series.

Don’t give steroids to SMEs when paracetamol can work, says SEBI’s Ashwini Bhatia

SEBI permanent member Ashwani Bhatia stressed the importance of a medical analogy while discussing the SME sector. “Don’t give steroids to SMEs when paracetamol can work,” he said.

Bhatia pointed out that over Rs 14,000 crore has been raised through SME listings, including Rs 6,000 crore in the last year alone.

A SEBI permanent member also expressed caution about SME (small and medium enterprise) listings, noting that while bankers should learn to say no, they often fail to do so when it comes to SME IPO candidates.

Veteran investor Vijay Kedia also believes that many SME IPOs are generating excitement and that nine out of ten are manipulated. He added that there is manipulation in both the SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) segment and in the large enterprise segment.
