Top 14 Cities in the US People Are Fleeing

Californian cities don’t appeal to everyone. Many places in the Golden State were among the best 14 metros where more people moved than moved in, adjusted for population.

Business Insider looked at negative net domestic migration estimates for U.S. metropolitan statistical areas for the period July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. Negative net domestic migration means there were more people fleeing those statistical areas metropolitan for another place in the United States than people arriving from the United States. We adjusted these estimates based on the population of each metropolis as of July 1, 2022, to obtain migration rates per 1,000 inhabitants.

Before adjusting for population size, negative net domestic migration was largest in the greater New York metropolitan area, with a value of -238,494. This was followed by Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California, with a value of -154,634, then Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana, with a value of -71,310.

Los Angeles continued to stand out during metro adjustment areas according to the size of their population. Six of the 14 metros with the highest negative net domestic migration rates per 1,000 residents were California metros. This includes San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont – as well as Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim.

New Orleans-Metairie, Louisiana stood out the most important is its negative net domestic migration rate per 1,000 inhabitants among metropolises, with a value of -17.5.
