It was a busy season in Broadway, crowded with big stars, Boffo Hits – and solid contenders for prices. This year’s Tony Awards’ appointments seemed particularly difficult to foresee, and when the nominators revealed the complete list, he did not disappoint with more than his fair share of unexpected twists and turns. Here are the biggest snobs and surprises of this year’s Tony nominations:
Snub: Total laundering for “Othello”
The Broadway renewal of “Othello” drew a lot of attention this spring – for its heavy distribution of celebrities (Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal), its record box -office and its price of tickets higher in the sky. But perhaps in the largest snob of the morning, the series did not draw the attention of Tony’s nominators, who ignored “Othello” for the best renewal of the play and left Washington and Gyllenhaal out of the race for the first actor in a room. The criticisms have been definitely mixed on it, it is therefore not surprising that the series is not a favorite among the nominators – but the complete whitening is always a shock.
Snub: the triple crown of Kieran Culkin will have to wait
Culkin arrived in the revival of Broadway of “Glengarry Glen Ross”, freshly out of his Oscar victory for “a real pain” – and the timing had experts in awards wondering if the actor, who won an Emmy Award for “succession” in January 2024, could mark the “triple crown” of the action – Oscar, Emmy and Tony – month. But this was not the case, and the nominators left Culkin out of the race for the actor in a room (although they made a head of “Glengarry” co-star, Bob Odenkirk).
Surprise: “our city” sneaks
During a sparse year for the category, “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “Othello” each had to get a sign of the head for the best renewal of a piece alongside productions well appreciated by “Eureka Day” and “Yellow Face”. But neither “Othello” nor “Glengarry” had the cup, which opened up space to “our city” – also directed by Kenny Leon, who organized “Othello” – to claim a place, alongside another of Shakespeare’s awakenings at strong sales of this season, “Romeo + Juliet”.
Snub: Idina Menzel and “Redwood” come from it empty
Menzel is a Broadway favorite, and “Redwood” is a passionate project that she designed as well as the headlines. The opinions of the show were mixed, so it did not seem likely to be a major competitor this season – and of course, the musical was completely excluded, not only from the main ultra -high actress in a musical category, but also of the design categories for which “refrection” seemed a possibility, thanks to its technologically ambitious stage.
Surprise: James Monroe Iglehart gets a little love
One of the strongest elements of the bio -music “A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical” was the main performance of Igglehart as Louis Armstrong – but this short -term musical closed in February and tended to get lost in prognosis for prize. The nominators, however, remembered and tapped Iglehart (already winner of Tony for “Aladdin”) as one of the six candidates for best actor in a musical.
Snub: “Good Night and Good Luck” by George Clooney is missing the best game
Like “Othello”, “Good Night and Good Luck” by Broadway had a lot of press this spring for its box office success and star casting. Adapted by Clooney and Grant Heslov of the 2005 film that they co-written, “Good Night” benefited from a smooth and impressive production (directed by David Cromer, who also organized “Dead Outlaw”) and a opportune theme, which apparently made the series a competitor of the best game. But in a crowded season, the nominators left the list. (Clooney, however, still has a chance to honor the podium: it is ready for the best actor in a room.)
Surprise: “goal” exceeds high expectations
“Purpose” – a new piece by Branden Jacobs -Jenkins, writer of Tony Winning “appropriate” from last year – had always seemed ready to do well with the nominators. But it did even better than expected in some of the categories of congested theater of this year: with the expected names of Jon Michael Hill, Latanya Richardson Jackson and Kara Young (a winner of Tony last year for “Purlie Victorious”), the Harry Lennix camouflage joined Hill in the race for the main actor and Glenn Davis was a place for an actor star.
Snub: Helen J. Shen is pressed Tightly
One of the first most buzzing performances of the season came from Shen, who plays alongside Darren Criss in “Perhaps Happy Ending”. But out of the 10 nominations accumulated by this program, Shen was not among them, left aside a category of power plants centered on the power plants which includes Audra McDonald (“Gypsy”), Nicole Scherzinger (“Sunset boulevard”) and the two main ladies of “Death becomes”, Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard. Another deserving beginning, Jasmine Amy Rogers (“Boop”) cut – but with only five nominees in this category this year, Shen was left out.
Surprise: finish Strazza turns heads in “John Proctor is the villain”
One of the strongest contenders for the season, “John Proctor is the villain”, has a united actor set, among which most of the attention was focused on his advance, the star of “Stranger Things” Sadie Sink. She obtained a name, like the Co-Star Gabriel Ebert (Tony winner for “Matilda”)-just like their Co-Star Final Strazza, whose out-of-competition work in the show seemed likely to get lost in the Shuffle. The nominators made sure that not, the tapping to join the race for the actress featured in play.
Snub: “Real women have curves” will not be part of the biggest race of the night
The Tony Night Trophy – and the only one to reliably move the Box Office Amptil – is the price of the best musical, and the attention that is accompanied by the appointment is often a key element of the momentum. Each new musical of the season hopes a place on the list, and this year, four programs (“perhaps happy end”, “Dead Outlaw”, “Death becomes her”, “Buena Vista Social Club”) looked like locks, so the last place was in two programs that seemed to have a blow: “Operation Mince” and “Real Women Curves”. In the end, the nominators went with the popular West End “Operation Mincemeat” import to complete the category; “Real Women” scored two names, one for the score of Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez and one for Justina Machado for the featured actress in a musical.
