TOKYO – The number of COVID-19 cases reported in Tokyo has totaled 4,058 people, a daily record, city hall said on Saturday, stoking concerns as the Japanese capital hosts the Olympics.
Critics have long said that the Olympics should be canceled or postponed, as tens of thousands of athletes, sponsors and media gather from around the world.
Athletes are tested for the coronavirus every day.
Twenty-one people working at the Olympics tested positive on Saturday, none of whom are athletes.
The Games have so far had 241 positive tests, including 23 athletes.
Japan has recorded more than 15,000 deaths linked to COVID-19. Daily reported cases have also reached record highs in Tokyo’s neighboring Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.
