The NFL has made a change in overtime but did not make another change: the 32 owners of the league voted to demand that the two teams obtain possession in overtime, but it voted a proposal to extend the overtime of the regular season at 15 minutes, as in the playoffs. Which could create interesting scenarios and involuntary consequences.
If the team that receives the kick -off in overtime takes place on the clock and marks on a long slow journey, the period of 10 minutes in overtime will not give the team that obtains the second ball for a score.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said that he liked the concept of guaranteeing each team the opportunity to own the ball, but he recognized that there was a clock management element at stake, where the team that obtains the ball first could try to miss the chronometer on the opening of overtime.
“I am everything for the two teams who get football. At least it gives you a chance. It gives you a fair chance,” said Bowles. “Now, if a team holds the long ball and you are in two minutes mode, we will see.”
The proposal to extend overtime of the regular season to a period of 15 minutes has not succeeded in this league meeting, but it seems likely that it will return. A full period of 15 minutes in overtime with the two teams obtaining a possession seems to be a more equitable way to determine a winner than an additional time of 10 minutes shortened which leaves a team in pressed mode.
