During the Lok Sabha proceedings on Friday, another TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with “folded hands” to allow Moitra to speak before the vote, but this was refused .
Later, Om Birla explained why Mahua Moitra was not allowed to speak in the House.
“I have a copy of the traditions that were followed before. Former Presidents Somnath Chatterjee and Pranab Mukherjee were here earlier… The rules and traditions given by them are considered our rules. Somnath Chatterjee had said that members against whom charges are made are given sufficient time to speak before the committee… This House has the tradition that the traditions followed by previous Speakers are always followed by subsequent Speakers…,” the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. .
Mahua Moitra “money against request” case
Businessman Darshan Hiranandani, who allegedly paid Moitra to raise questions in Parliament about the Adani Group, had claimed in a signed affidavit that Moitra had targeted industrialist Gautam Adani to “malign and embarrass” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a meeting on November 9, the Committee adopted its report recommending Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha over the allegation of ‘payment against request’.
Six members of the panel, including suspended Congresswoman Preneet Kaur, voted in favor of the report. Four panel members from opposition parties submitted notes of dissent.
Opposition members termed the report a “fake match” and said the complaint filed by BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey, which the committee considered, was substantiated by “a shadow of evidence “.
Moitra can only be expelled if the House votes in favor of the panel’s recommendation.
