Tiger Woods reveals daughter Sam has no interest in golf because it “took daddy away” from him…and admits he wishes father and son Charlie had met

Tiger Woods has revealed that his daughter Sam is not interested in golf because it takes up a lot of time with her father.

The sport has a “negative connotation” for the 16-year-old, Woods said Wednesday, because he was part of the jet set for much of his childhood.

The 48-year-old has rarely made headlines in the three decades since he turned professional in 1996 – thanks to his success on the course and his controversial behavior off it.

These days, his son Charlie, 15, is a promising amateur prospect who is regularly seen playing with his father.

Sam, meanwhile, was Tiger’s caddy at last year’s PNC Championship, but the 15-time major winner said he had to maintain a relationship with her off the course.

“She has, I think, a negative connotation in the game,” the 48-year-old said of his daughter.

“She has, I think, a negative connotation in this game because at that time, when she was growing up, golf took Dad away from her,” Woods said today.

“I had to pack up and leave, I would be gone for weeks and that has a negative connotation. So we’re developing our own relationship, our own relationship outside of golf – we do things that don’t involve golf while my son and I do everything golf related. So it’s very different.

None of Tiger’s children were born before his own father died in 2006. Earl Woods was instrumental in his son’s success and the 48-year-old has spoken of his regret at never having spent time with his grandchildren.

“I just wish my dad could have met Charlie and I wish Charlie could have met my dad,” he said. “There are commonalities: there is me in there. But I would have liked them to meet. They would have loved each other.

Although he insists his father is “always with me,” Woods wishes he had listened to him more when he was alive.

“It’s amazing how many things I say to my kids that come from him,” said Woods – who even claimed he felt like his father.

“I wish I had followed his advice more. I wish I had paid more attention to him while he was alive, because I say many of the same things he said during the short time I had him on this earth.

“But I’m so happy that he’s a part of my life and that I can pass on some of the things that are in me through him.”
