Three-alarm wildfire burns 10 acres in Newark

NEWARK – A three-alarm wildfire burned 10 acres Tuesday evening in Newark, officials said.

The fire was reported shortly before 4 p.m. at Eureka Drive and Stevenson Boulevard, according to Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Cheryl Hurd.

The wind-driven fire spread quickly toward the Union Pacific railroad tracks, Hurd said, adding that trains were stopped.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire away from commercial buildings and had to deal with trees and a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. utility pole catching fire, according to Hurd.

Around 5:30 p.m., firefighters sounded a third alarm and additional engines from the Hayward and Oakland fire departments were called to the scene, Hurd said.

The fire’s progress was stopped around 7 p.m. and trains resumed running about an hour later, according to Hurd.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Hurd said.
