Bangui, Central African Republic (AP) – Thousands of people went down to the street on Friday in the Central African Republic to protest against President Faustin Archangel Touadera to present himself for a third term with the support of the mercenaries led by Russian of the Wagner group.
The rally was organized by opposition parties who oppose the third term of Touadera as president.
The country is one of the first in which the Wagner merchants Operations established with the commitment to fight against rebel groups and restore peace. “We are here to say no to a third term for Faustin Archangel Touadera. But more than that, we want to protect our sovereignty, on which Touadera and the Wagner have trapped,” said a member of the opposition, Justin Winè.
“The Wagner violated and killed without justice. It is not normal. To end their reign, Touadera must leave,” he said.
The car has been in conflict since 2013, when Muslim majority rebels have seized power and forced the president of the time, François Bozizé, of his functions. Six of the 14 armed groups that have signed a 2019 peace deal later left the agreement. The inhabitants and the government credited the forces of Wagner for preventing the rebels from taking control of Bangui in 2021.
Martin Ziguélé, spokesperson for the opposition, thanked the country’s youth for having attended the gathering on Friday by the thousands to defend the constitution of the country.
