Thousands of people walked in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday to commemorate International Women’s Day and defend the restoration and expansion of women’s rights in the United States and worldwide.
“For us, the main objective is to ensure that women understand that we are not yet equal,” said Emiliana Guereca, founder of Women’s March Foundation, who organized the Los Angeles event. “We have lost the rights instead of obtaining rights.”
Guereca said the walkers protested against Trump’s actions and proposals to reduce health spending, restrict access to the vote and make diversity, equity and inclusion efforts back down.
The march was created in 2017 after the first inauguration of Trump. That year, the organizers estimated that 750,000 people attended what seemed to be the biggest event of this type in Los Angeles since an immigration march in 2006.
On Saturday, Guereca estimated that 15,000 people participated, many of whom were young participants for the first time.
“Our fight is for these generations,” she said.
