Ann Arbor, Mi – Thousands of flower peony plants were destroyed during the night at the Peony We Upjohn garden at the University of Michigan.

Tony Kolenic, director of Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, shared the news in a video on Sunday, June 1 on social networks.

“These peonies are not only plants, they are living beings,” said Kolenic in an article on Facebook. “They were nourished during generations and bring joy, community and links with the natural world for so many people every season.”

With more than 800 separate peonies, the garden is the largest collection of flower peony plants in the country. Peak Bloom was to take place this weekend.

“What happened here is an act of contempt not only for the garden, but for the community and really in life itself,” Kolenic said in the social media post. “However, it’s a resilient garden. It will flower – it will be fine.”

A message left with the police looking for additional information was not immediately returned on Sunday.
