We had always dreamed of owning a beach house for family holidays and weekend getaways, but our budget and constantly packaged schedules of children were never possible.
Then, many years later, when we were back to retirement and the children had left the house, we gave the idea on the table and bought a beautiful house in Delaware just 10 to 20 minutes by car from a series of virgin beaches.
The house is in a newly constructed development dotted with ponds filled with ducks and a quick road in the heart of a picturesque historic village filled with restaurants, live music and a pinch of art galleries.
My husband spends hours throwing the coastline for the striped bar and the blue fish, and our neighbors, many new retirees like us, are welcoming and earth-up.
Moving here is one of the best decisions we have ever made, but three years old, we are planning our outing.
Before Delaware, we have lived in the same house in the same suburban city in New Jersey for over 15 years.
However, during this time, we had always felt on the outskirts of the social scene, have rarely had invitations to dinner and had trouble making friends.
We both had good jobs and have lived a middle -class life, but our roots were blue passes. My husband was the only person we knew in the region who had not obtained his university diploma.
We want a change, a more complete calendar and a respite from throbbing solitude.
The considerably lower land taxes of Delaware and more affordable real estate meant less pressure on our budget.
We also bought a more recent house, which meant spending less time and money for endless repairs than our 94 -year -old colonial in New Jersey.
Despite the advantages, the country’s sickness was impossible to shake.
We fail to live 20 to 30 minutes by car from our family which is still in jersey. And while the small village where we live is good, that’s just that – little.
We prefer to be closer to the bustle of New York with its various districts, its main museums and its dynamic theater and music scenes, often frequented in New Jersey.
We also realized that we were not lovers of the beach that we thought. Going to the beach had already been a treat. Now we keep it easily for granted, which makes it less special.
In addition, the traffic jams and the beaches packed in season make headaches and a sweaty biberge, with parking lots at 8:30 am
The noise, the grinding of cars and the lines apparently snapping all the coffee and the lunch location conspire to make a summer day as relaxing as a journey in town in its own right.
We also miss our hikes through the small mountain range which was a few minutes from our house in the NJ. The flat and bleached terrain without a sight in sight is simply not the same.
To get this outdoor experience now, we have to drive 90 minutes to the north, on a dark nervous gaiety motorway.
Welcome to the carpets for pickleball teams, girls for girls, sharing meals and a dizzying number of groups and clubs have facilitated the birth of relaxed and close friendships.
Unfortunately, we have the pain in the country so that the neighborhood we have left feels really relaxed. It is as if we were at a great party – great to be invited, but not to stay indefinitely.
The gift of these friendships gave us a feeling of belonging which had always been out of reach in our old district, and, above all, a social confidence and a insight that will help us to choose our next community wisely.
Our turnaround surprised us, but aging highlighted the way we want to spend our time and where. And it is closer to the convenience and culture of a large city, imbued with a diverse community, surrounded by varied land and closer to the family.
We have learned that retirement decisions cannot always be a matter of money. Sometimes they must be motivated by what enriches the soul.
