Thomas Tuchel accused the referee of not penalizing Gabriel for picking up the ball in the box because it was a “childish mistake”, as two controversial penalty decisions left both teams frustrated.

In the 66th minute, David Raya delivered a goal kick to Gabriel who then handled the ball. But referee Glenn Nyberg let play continue in an incident that was not shown live on television.

“For me, for all of us, he (the referee) made a huge mistake by not giving the penalty for handball,” Tuchel said.

“I know it’s a crazy situation but they put the ball down, he whistles, he gives the ball away and the defender (Gabriel) takes the ball in his hand.

“What really makes us angry are the explanations on the ground. He told our players that it was a “kid’s mistake” and that he wouldn’t give away a penalty like that in the quarter-final.

Gabriel clearly handled the ball on a goal kick, but the referee chose to do nothing.

Tuchel said the referee claimed Gabriel’s mistake was a “childish mistake” and did not award a penalty.

“It’s a horrible, horrible explanation. He judges handballs. Child’s mistake, adult’s mistake. Never mind. We are angry because this is a huge decision against us.

TNT Sports analyzed the incident after the match, with pundit Rio Ferdinand saying: “It’s a pen, oh my God. How can this not be given?

“I was so adamant that Saka’s was, I’m even more for that. It’s incredible. How can he denounce it like this and not give it away?

Martin Keown said the incident was “absolutely indefensible”, adding: “The referee may be a little overwhelmed.

“We thought he had a decent game, but there are key moments in the game that both teams can look at.”

Later in the match, tied 2-2, Bukayo Saka went down in the 93rd minute after his right leg came into contact with Manuel Neuer, with the goalkeeper rushing out of his net.

Nyberg signaled to continue play and at full time, a furious Saka headed towards the match official as he left the field.

Mikel Arteta said: “I didn’t see it. The decision has been made, we cannot change it.

“Yeah, sure (I can sympathize with Saka’s reaction) if he thought it was a penalty, sure.”

He added: “In the Champions League you can’t give anything to the opponent, we gave away two goals today. When you find yourself in these situations, they will punish you. That’s the biggest lesson.

“I feel the belief that we’re going to go to Munich and we’re going to have a chance to win it and we’re going to be better in certain areas. That’s how we’re going to prepare for it.
