(This article contains major spoilers for season 2, episode 2 of “The Last of Us”.)))
The still amazed or trembling viewers of the sudden torsion of the Sunday episode of “The Last of Us” do not find a surprise that the same scene fueled an online reaction when it took place in a video game five years ago.
Fans of The Last of Us Part I (2013) came in his suite wishing to continue playing as Joel, the smuggler escorting a teenager, Ellie, who seems immune to an fungal zombie apocalypse. They spent hours studying his Hangdog face and listening to her gruff reassuring lines. So when, early in the last part of us (2020), Joel was murdered without ceremony by Abby, the daughter of a doctor he killed at the end of the previous match, the players took the revision by a review bombing the rest.
Although criticisms largely love the last two games, some players were furious by narrative change, angry the creators in online criticism. Without a stable and imperturbable presence of Joel, the continuation East deprived of its particularly violent protection mark. This can be in the shadow of Joel, but there remains a story engaged in the journey of Ellie – his difficulties, his successes and his macabre failures.
By looking back on the series, I must admit that I was also dismayed by the premature disappearance of Joel. But my protest comes from a different place from those who were simply resistant to change or too immature to accept a pair of playable female characters. (The bombing of the review was also rooted in homophobic anxiety after the trailer for the game has shown that Ellie kissed another woman.) I did not cry Joel himself, but the mountain of the possibilities he took with him.
The first game ends on a heartbreaking moment of painful ambiguity. Joel (expressed by Troy Baker in the game and played by Pedro Pascal in the television show) has just done something monstrous. He murdered an entire hospital wing full of doctors and resistance fighters, supposedly in the name of Ellie. Joel saves Ellie (Ashley Johnson / Bella Ramsey) from an operation that would have killed her at the cost of dozens of lives and, potentially, the future of the species.
When Ellie wakes up and asks what happened, Joel ment. He tells him that the doctors abandoned the procedure, a pitiful and fragile pretext.
