This Preakness Stakes horse is named after Will Ferrell’s iconic character – NBC Chicago

What is this? A center for… horses?

Eight thoroughbreds will take center stage in the 2024 Preakness Stakes on Saturday, and a quick glance at the field for the second leg of the Triple Crown may remind some of an iconic Will Ferrell character.

That’s because the colt expected to start from the No. 1 post at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is Mugatu, who is the same name of the villain played by Ferrell in the “Zoolander” comedy films.

The horse, owned by Average Joe Racing Stables and Dan Wells, is named after Ferrell’s character “Zoolander.” In fact, Mugatu’s father or father is named Blofeld, a nod to the villain of the “James Bond” franchise.

Mugatu qualified for the 2024 Kentucky Derby as a second alternate, but ultimately did not make the field at Churchill Downs. He has one victory, one second place and three third places in 12 starts.

Mugatu was given 20-1 morning odds for Saturday’s Preakness, scheduled for 6:50 p.m. ET. The race will be broadcast on NBC, Peacock, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
