Third fatal car crash in Portland on Christmas Day

A motorist has died in a crash in Southeast Portland, the third traffic-related death on Christmas Day.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. on 122nd Avenue Southeast, just south of Powell Boulevard.

Police did not specify the causes of the accident or the number of vehicles involved.

A driver was found seriously injured at the scene and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died, according to police.

The police bureau’s major accident response team responded to the scene.

As crash team investigators examined evidence and interviewed witnesses, a white SUV arrived at the crime scene and was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, police say from Portland.

122nd Avenue Southeast will be blocked at Powell Boulevard for several hours while the investigation continues.

Anyone with information about this incident who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit via email at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and in reference to Case #23- 331614.

Earlier today, a driver died after a single-car crash around 1 p.m. on Southwest Barbur Boulevard near Taylors Ferry Road.

And shortly after midnight Monday, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Southeast Portland in a hit-and-run crash, police said.

Traffic-related deaths in Portland remain just shy of a 30-year high as the year draws to a close. Last week, the Portland Bureau of Transportation recorded 61 traffic deaths so far in 2023. In 2022, the agency reported 63 people were killed on the city’s roads.
