On Thursday afternoon, the tech giant posted on its System Status dashboard that “users were unable to use” iMessage, as well as FaceTime and HomeKit.
The outages lasted from 2:49 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. PT, according to Apple’s update.
“Apple is ruining relationships by turning off iMessage,” @onlydioria posted on X during the technical issue.
It’s extremely unusual for iMessage to crash in this way. The service has become an integral part of America’s social fabric, with teenagers who don’t have iPhones worried that their green text bubbles don’t appear correctly in group messages.
Google, the company behind the Android smartphone platform, has tried to get Apple to abandon this stressful form of social stigma. But you know, blue bubbles sell iPhones, so no dice. Even the DOJ, in its antitrust lawsuit against Apple, focused on the stigmatization of green and blue bubbles.
That didn’t stop some Android phone users from poking fun at Thursday’s iMessage outage.
“The message is broken. Kiss the green bubble,” Phillip Lewis wrote on X.
