Donald Trump’s prices make consumer goods more expensive, and he doesn’t want anyone to know. This week, he phoned Jeff Bezos in a Tizzy, furious against an Amazon plan reported to show consumers how much the price of each product had to new prices on imported products. The site would intend to print the figure in parallel with the price of the list to try to be absent from the responsibility of the inevitable price increases.

After Trump’s call in Bezos, Amazon publicly denied the report, saying that the plan was only intended for its spin -off website, a low -cost competitor for Shein and Temu – and, moreover, was “never approved and will not occur”. The white house press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Tuesday briefing that if Amazon publicly listed import costs on her goods, it would be a “hostile political act”.

Cue the title Clickhole: On this problem, Leavitt has one point. Explicitly renting the cost of goods to trade policy in a way that everyday people can understand is intrinsically political. And because it would poorly reflect on Trump, highlighting the burden he devotes to American consumers, it would also be a de facto shot against his diet.

This is why, from today, each American company selling a good or a service that involves a product affected by prices should do exactly what Amazon denies that it provided: detail the price load, list it at the bottom of the receipt and emphasize it when customers complain about the price increase. Call this a Trump tax.

Specialized grocers peddled Italian cheese districts at an exorbitant price should do so. Manicure salons that lose access to inexpensive disposable manicure tools should do so. Megastores Chock-Plein of items made in Chinese, French restaurants with wines lists and more expensive department stores, billing more for leather items, supermarkets for storage of 40%frozen shrimp bags, you should not ask consumers more for each purchase.

It is a win-win proposal. Companies will escape the blame to sell too expensive products and services. Customers will gain transparency and a line of conduct: if they will bring their complaints to republican officials, the Trump administration can fall back on a policy that will make life more difficult to most Americans, especially those with close finances. And if the payment of the Trump tax transforms voters against the guy who made a campaign promise to reduce prices on the first day in power, too bad. If prices are not a problem and Americans can easily adjust their expenses to welcome them, as the president claims, he should be happy to have his name on them.

Most of the prices that Trump announced in early April are on break for 90 days, with a few notable exceptions: prices on goods imported from China, which can reach 145%, are already in force. This means that Chinese products are now or will soon be approximately twice and a half times more than a few weeks ago – or completely unavailable, because importers are reluctant to the sky prices.

There is a precedent to institute explicit customer supplements due to economic forces beyond the control of a company. Lyft and Uber have once added fuel costs to help drivers compensate for the climbing of gas prices. During the Coronavirus, New York allowed restaurants to add a temporary “COVVI-19 recovery charge of up to 10% to customer bills. After the residents of the Columbia district voted to eliminate the minimum wage so -called for the bottom – a designation which allowed restaurants to pay the servers a lower hourly rate until the advice made the difference – the managers began to add service costs to customer checks to cover higher labor costs.

And in recent years, paying additional costs during the restaurant has become commonplace. In 2023, 15% of restaurants started adding supplements to their check for various reasons set out, often linked to inflation. The owners of restaurants paid more for food, labor and credit card sweeping, and they did not want to frighten customers by increasing the prices of the menu.

These costs were not intended to be read by the guests as a Biden tax, but they could just as could be. Most of the Americans blamed Biden and the Democrats for the outbreak of postpandmic inflation, and here is a big fatty load, listed on their receipts, to quantify the cost. The costs have put a psychic distance between the products and the additional money, which means that the charges seem to be related to a sales tax – completely out of the control of a business owner.

Some retailers are already experiencing a version of my proposed Trump tax. (The name is essential For the concept, people!) TEMU, a Ultracheap product site made largely in China, recently started to list “import costs” as a line at the cash register, figures that have sometimes more than doubled the total purchase cost. Shein, a big competitor of TEMU for women’s clothing and life products, has taken a different approach, promising consumers no surprise at the checkout. Instead, the e-tailer has folded pricing costs by increasing prices at all levels, including on average 51% on the main beauty and health products and more than 30% on household items.

Guess what strategy caused the White House? Americans were able to buy super cheap products abroad from Shein and TEMU only due to a long -standing flaw that has exempted purchases of less than $ 800 from tariffs and customs paperwork. Trump had to fill this gap – hence the additional Temu costs on cheap consumer goods – but can be fell by eviscerating the application of prices to these shipments. People already attribute a quarter of work to Temu.

If this report is true, think of what could come from the name of Trump at the additional cost on receipts and invoices across the country. Even if this act does not reach the president himself, he will cement him indelible during this period of financial difficulties in the normal American brain. Think of the cocvid recovery checks, which some continue to attribute to the president’s generosity because they were decorated with his name. Obamacare, today a title of respect for largely popular health care legislation, was originally an epithet invented by the conservatives to link the president then to a bill they hoped. Politicians know that Americans cannot always see the link between an act of government and the responsible party. It is best to make fun of our heads with it.

A Trump tax does not explain each impact of imminent prices. Some consumer products will not be more expensive – they will not be available at all. Already, expeditions to the United States from China plunge. And once again, prices take effect, grocery buyers can be forced to choose from a much smaller variety in imported food categories, such as coffee. In these cases, instead of a reference to the Trump tax, I would be satisfied with small signs on the empty shelves indicating: “Forgive our void!” Trump prices prevent us from selling (insert the brand or product name). ” The Highsnobiety store makes an online vision on this subject: on the pages of goods, it has stopped selling to American customers following prices, the site declares: “This article is temporarily unavailable in your region due to the impact of American prices.” Would the store kill to add Asset Somewhere in there?

The Supreme Court seems to think that the separation of the Church and the State is an anti-Catholic fanaticism

I do not expect many major national brands to get on board with my plan. Targets, home deposits and world safety routes will be too intimidated by Trump’s retribution threats to draw attention to his punitive policies. Companies may also want to use prices as an excuse to increase prices and keep them there, even if the prices are lifted. But some companies can see an increase in consumer transparency. Costco, for example, performs almost three -quarters of its profits from membership fees, and not products of products, and he keeps members on rollers by promising the lowest prices. He has already taken a stand against Trump’s attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion programs. It would be logical for Costco to show its members exactly why the company which supplies in half of the world’s cashews can no longer sell a giant pot for a bite of bread.

Large and small businesses could face Maga clients to detach the price rates instead of integrating them into the list prices. But the conservatives could lose their energy for boycotts as prices increase at all levels. Business owners who do not like Trump’s economy should seize this golden opportunity for the political effect, because it is famous to obtain average voters to understand public policy, identify its impacts and remember all this when it has just passed. Unlike, let’s say, the law on the reduction of inflation, a slight extremely consecutive legislation of the Biden era which has never crossed public conscience, the prices will have the advantage of affecting almost everyone, almost every day, directly and quantifiable. All that remains is to place the blame.

Correction, May 2, 2025: Due to a production error, this article initially disturbed the amount of prices will increase the cost of goods imported from China.
