Donald Trump’s prices make consumer goods more expensive, and he doesn’t want anyone to know. This week, he phoned Jeff Bezos in a Tizzy, furious against an Amazon plan reported to show consumers how much the price of each product had to new prices on imported products. The site would intend to print the figure in parallel with the price of the list to try to be absent from the responsibility of the inevitable price increases.

After Trump’s call in Bezos, Amazon publicly denied the report, saying that the plan was only intended for its spin -off website, a low -cost competitor for Shein and Temu – and, moreover, was “never approved and will not occur”. The white house press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Tuesday briefing that if Amazon publicly listed import costs on her goods, it would be a “hostile political act”.

This is why, from today, each American company selling a good or a service that involves a product affected by prices should do exactly what Amazon denies that it provided: detail the price load, list it at the bottom of the receipt and emphasize it when customers complain about the price increase. Call this a Trump tax.

Specialized grocers peddled Italian cheese districts at an exorbitant price should do so. Manicure salons that lose access to inexpensive disposable manicure tools should do so. Megastores Chock-Plein of items made in Chinese, French restaurants with wines lists and more expensive department stores, billing more for leather items, supermarkets for storage of 40%frozen shrimp bags, you should not ask consumers more for each purchase.

It is a win-win proposal. Companies will escape the blame to sell too expensive products and services. Customers will gain transparency and a line of conduct: if they will bring their complaints to republican officials, the Trump administration can fall back on a policy that will make life more difficult to most Americans, especially those with close finances. And if the payment of the Trump tax transforms voters against the guy who made a campaign promise to reduce prices on the first day in power, too bad. If prices are not a problem and Americans can easily adjust their expenses to welcome them, as the president claims, he should be happy to have his name on them.

Most of the prices that Trump announced in early April are on break for 90 days, with a few notable exceptions: prices on goods imported from China, which can reach 145%, are already in force.
