If you’re looking for the best place in the United States to raise your family, consider moving to Illinois or Pennsylvania.
Both states contain several cities that ranked highly in a recent Niche report rating the nation’s best places for families. The two states combined were home to seven of the ten best places to raise a family in America.
To rank each location based on its appeal to a family, the platform used data from the U.S. Census, Department of Education, and FBI. It evaluated factors such as the quality of the area’s public schools, cost of living, family-friendly amenities such as parks, libraries and cultural activities, and walkability.
Other factors considered include:
- Crime rate
- Accommodation
- Ethnic, generational and economic diversity
- Percentage of households with children
- Percentage of residents aged 17 and under
Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania. took the top spot on Niche’s list, thanks in part to the Philadelphia suburbs’ highly regarded public school system.
It has been one of the best places to live in the United States for several years. Niche gave it almost all A’s in categories like lodging, nightlife, diversity and family amenities.
The median listed home price in Chesterbrook was $355,000 in February 2024, down 4% year over year, according to Realtor.com. The median rent for an apartment in the suburb is $2,173, with an average size of about 950 square feet, according to RentCafe.

Long Grove, ranked second best place to raise a family, according to Niche.
The Chicago suburb earned A’s in categories including public schools, housing and family well-being. He got a B in nightlife and a B- in diversity.
“Living in Long Grove provides residents with a rural atmosphere and most residents own their homes,” the report states.
The suburb is northwest of Chicago, about an hour from downtown, and is known for its historic charm.
Long Grove has strict building ordinances to preserve its appearance, including rules regarding its sidewalks, fences and residential street lights.
The city’s website says Long Grove is “designed with a philosophy of nature preservation.”
The average home value in Long Grove is $808,847, up 7.9% from last year, according to Zillow.
