These 13 House Dems Oppose Resolution Condemning Iran Attack on Israel
The House of Representatives voted Thursday to condemn the recent Iranian missile and drone attack on Israel.
Thirteen progressive House Democrats voted against the resolution, along with Republican Thomas Massie, a hands-off libertarian who often opposes these types of resolutions.
The attack, the first ever launched from Iranian soil, came in response to Israel’s bombing of an Iranian consular facility in Syria on April 1. The attack was largely foiled thanks to American forces and Israeli missile defense systems.
In response to Sunday’s attack, House Republicans this week launched a flurry of resolutions and bills targeting Iran while affirming U.S. support for Israel.
This included a series of bills aimed at strengthening sanctions against Iran and its proxies in the Middle East, as well as a resolution condemning the pro-Palestinian slogan “from the river to the sea” as anti-Semitic, against which 44 Democratic deputies voted.
Most of these bills garnered broad bipartisan support, but a small cohort of progressive Democrats opposed them, if not all of them.
In a statement Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York accused Republicans of trying to “distract attention from their own incompetence” by introducing bills “deliberately designed to increase the likelihood of war.” regional murderer”.
“I will oppose any cynical attempt to further inflame tensions, destroy the path to peace in the region, and further divide the American people,” Ocasio-Cortez said. Other progressives have issued statements calling for broader de-escalation in the region.
Thursday’s resolution also included a clause affirming “the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security, including through security assistance and the sale of military equipment.”
As the death toll from Israel’s war in Gaza mounted, progressives increasingly called for conditioning — or outright refusing — any additional military aid to Israel. Democrats are also increasingly likely to view Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide.
Here are the 13 House Democrats who voted against the resolution:
Jamaal Bowman of New York
Cori Bush of Missouri
Greg Casar from Texas
Jonathan Jackson of Illinois
Pramila Jayapal of Washington
Hank Johnson of Georgia
Barbara Lee of California
Summer Lee from Pennsylvania
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York
Ilhan Omar of Minnesota
Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts
Delia Ramirez of Illinois
Rashida Tlaib of Michigan
