There will never have been a more embarrassed dressing room despite a win but Erik ten Hag rejects claim

Jamie Carragher believes no team in football history will be more embarrassed after a huge win than Manchester United.

The former Liverpool defender believes United boss Erik ten Hag is destined for the sack despite his side qualifying for the FA Cup final.

The Red Devils needed penalties to beat Championship side Coventry on Sunday, after letting a 3-0 lead slip with 20 minutes remaining.

And without a close VAR call in extra-time stoppage time, United would have been on the wrong side of the FA Cup’s greatest comeback.

With United set to miss out on Champions League football, Carragher believes the disappointing performance at Wembley will prove to be the final straw for Ten Hag.

He told Sky Sports: “I think this result has just cost Erik ten Hag his job. I think this result has just cost Erik ten Hag his job.

“It’s just bad performance after bad performance. This locker room is probably the most embarrassed locker room on a team that just won a big game.

“You can’t even celebrate this victory. Maybe it could somehow win the final, but I just don’t see any progress.

“We’re talking about someone’s job, but I just don’t see how they (owners) can look at the situation and be positive about it. I don’t see it.”

Although United fans also expressed outrage at the performance, Ten Hag instead praised his team for reaching back-to-back FA Cup finals.

He said: “We’ve reached two finals in two years and that’s a huge achievement.

“I see the mistakes we make. You can’t avoid them. But it’s not an embarrassment, it’s a huge achievement.

“We can play at very high levels but in the same match we can go to very low levels and it’s not explainable. It’s a question of game management, responsibility and decision-making.

“We have to do better on these occasions. Many times like this we let the result slip away, but today we got away with it.

“I don’t think heads have rolled, but we have had many setbacks and maybe our reaction is human but it is not acceptable. When you are in control you should win easily.

“We can’t say that this group doesn’t have the right mentality because they showed character today, but in the last part there was a lack of discipline. This season has had a lot of highs but also from bottom.

“Winning the FA Cup doesn’t make the season a success. We want to win more. I have mixed feelings and there are mixed feelings in the dressing room.

“You have to put yourself in a winning position first, but then you have to cross the finish line.

“In those moments we make mistakes and don’t take responsibility.”

United will now face rivals Manchester City on May 25 in a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final where they will seek revenge after their 2-1 defeat.
