There is a real national security risk with TikTok, ‘number of ways’ it can be corrected ‘if it turns out to be material’


During part of an interview with CBS that aired on Sunday’s ’60 Minutes’ and published on Friday’s ‘CBS Evening News’, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said there is a genuine national security concern. with TikTok, and “there are a number of ways” that “this concern, if material, could be addressed.”

Host Norah O’Donnell asked, “For parents of teenagers who spend a lot of time on TikTok, what are those legitimate national security concerns?”

Yellen replied, “Well, it’s that private information could potentially end up in the hands of the Chinese and used in ways that negatively impact Americans. And there are a number of ways this could be – this concern, if it turns out to be significant, could be addressed.

O’Donnell then asked, “I feel like we’re dancing around the issue with TikTok. I mean what is it – what could china do with my teenager and what kind of videos they watch if they watch silly pet videos why – why is this a problem national security? »

Yellen replied, “Well, they have access to a lot of data about your teenager from the information they collect while your teenager is online.”
