The writers room ends in six weeks

“Shogun” is getting closer to a new season. Building on their dominance at the 2025 Golden Globes – winning the drama series award, as well as three acting wins – the writers behind “Shogun” are busy working on the series’ sequel.

“Well, it’s in the works,” said executive producer/creator Rachel Kondo. “We always try. We didn’t give up. And I’m not sure what we can say. Kondo’s husband and fellow executive producer/creator Justin Marks added, “We’re about six weeks out of the writers’ room.”

Marks recently struck a new overall television deal with FX Productions, in which he is expected to develop new projects for FX, including potential new seasons of “Shogun” with Kondo. Potential new seasons of the series are being developed in partnership with the Clavell estate.

On Sunday, “Shpgun” swept the drama categories; Besides best drama series, the series won star Hiroyuki Sanada for best TV series actor, Anna Sawai for best TV series actress and Setadanobu Asano for best TV supporting actor.

In September, the series set a record with its 18 Emmy wins, the most wins for a series in a single season. This included wins for Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Best Actress in a Drama Series (Anna Sawai).

“Shogun” was originally considered a limited series, but with its success and rave reviews, FX began thinking about making it a regular series. In May, star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the historical epic set in Japan. Then, FX moved the series into the drama categories in the 2024 Emmy race.

Later in May, it was revealed that a writers room would open last summer to develop two additional seasons of the series. FX has yet to officially renew the show.
