Born on the island of Corsica, French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) conquered vast areas of Europe in the 19th century. After rising through the military ranks in the aftermath of the French Revolution and taking power in a 1799 coup d’état, he was crowned emperor at Notre-Dame cathedral in 1804.
