The world champion GUKESH eliminated, Arjun Erigaisi only Indian to qualify for the quarter -finals – Firstpost

The Paris Round of the Grand Slam Tour of the Freestyle 2025 round of the Grand Schical Jambe ended Tuesday with many drama, sorrow and remarkable performance. The GUKESH Indian failure prodigy campaign concluded a disappointing note while the 18 -year -old, who recently won the title of world champion, failed to make the quarter -finals, marking only 3.5 points and finished 11th.

Arjun Erigaisi has become the only Indian to progress to the KOs, finishing strongly with 6.5 points to reserve his place in the last eight. The former world champion Magnus Carlsen was in a glorious form throughout the round scene, becoming undefeated and ending with 8.5 points. He was joined at the top by Ian Népomniachtchi in Russia, who also finished 8.5 points after consecutive victories in the last two laps.

During the Round 11 matches, Erigaisi won a victory over Vidit Gujrathi to seal the qualification. Meanwhile, Gukesh’s defeat against Nepomniachtchi has confirmed its early release. R Praggnanandhaa amazed Nodirbek Abdusattorov but in vain because he too was eliminated early. Hikaru Nakamura kept his hopes alive by defeating Richard report, while the winner of the first leg Vincent Keymer beat Fabiano Caruana. Carlsen and local boy Maxime Vachier-Lagrave played a draw.

The quarter -finals will be held over two days on April 9 and 10. The direct elimination stage will follow a single elimination format. Each match will be challenged on two classic games, with players alternating colors. Players classified from the first to the fourth in order can choose from the classified players from the fifth to the eighth as an adversary in the quarterfinals.
