Noor Abdalla, the wife of the graduate and Palestinian activist of the University detained and Columbia, Mahmoud Khalil, announced the birth of their son.
In a statement published Monday evening, Abdalla wrote: “I welcomed our son in the world earlier in the day without Mahmoud by my side. Despite our ice request to allow Mahmoud to attend birth, they denied his temporary release to meet our son.
The Ministry of Internal Security denied Khalil the opportunity to attend the birth of his first child, which he could only live by a telephone call. Khalil is detained in a detention center in Louisiana more than 1,000 miles from New York Hospital where his son was delivered.
Abdalla, a 28 -year -old dentist who lives in New York, and her son, born early Monday morning, are both healthy.
Abdalla is an American citizen born and grew up in Michigan. His parents immigrated to the United States of Syria about 40 years ago.
According to emails, examined by the New York Times, Khalil’s lawyers have suggested several ways he could have attended at birth, including allowing him a two -week leave while carrying an ankle instructor and demanding planned recordings.
“A two -week leave in this civil detention case would be both reasonable and human so that both parents can be present for the birth of their first child,” the lawyers wrote.
The request was refused by the Immigration and Customs Application Office of New Orleans.
Khalil was arrested on March 8 on March 8 that he is considered a threat to foreign policy in the United States. Earlier this month, an immigration judge judged that Khalil was eligible to be expelled from the United States.

Abdalla has fought for the release of her husband since the day of her arrest, arguing that the Trump administration “tries to silence” anyone who is expressed for Palestinian rights.
“We will not be silenced. We will persist, with an even greater resolution, and we will transmit this strength to our children and our children-until Palestine is free, ”she wrote on April 8.
In his statement shortly after the birth of her son, Abdalla promised to continue fighting for the release of Khalil. “I will continue to fight every day so that Mahmoud comes home. I know that when Mahmoud is released, he will show our son how to be courageous, thoughtful and compassionate, just like his father. “
