The fine of $ 570 million Apple from the EU sparked a strong white house reprimand, which qualified a form of economic extortion, Reuters Reports.
The fine was announced Wednesday by the European Commission, following an official survey on Apple’s compliance with the Bloc digital market law (DMA), historical legislation aimed at limiting the domination of the so-called “guardian” companies. According to the Commission, Apple violated the DMA by restricting developers to inform users of alternative payment options outside the App Store and preventing the distribution of iOS applications via competing application markets.

This new form of economic extortion will not be tolerated by the United States. The extraterritorial regulations that specifically target and undergo American companies, stifle innovation and allow censorship will be recognized as obstacles to trade and a direct threat to free civil society.
Apple said he was planning to appeal the decision. The company called it “another example of the commission unfairly targeting the business” with actions that are “bad for the confidentiality and security of our users”. Penalties represent approximately 0.1% of the annual income of each company, which is significantly lower than the maximum potential fine of 10% authorized by the DMA.
The decision comes in the midst of current trade negotiations between the EU and the United States, which could potentially add another layer of complexity to transatlantic technological regulations.
