The White House condemns Elon Musk for his “attacks” against Anthony Fauci

The White House condemned billionaire Elon Musk on Monday after he ridiculed President Joe Biden’s close coronavirus adviser and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci on social media.

“My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci,” Musk wrote on his Twitter account on Sunday.

The post became a rival on social media, earning 177,000 retweets and 1.1 million likes in less than 24 hours.

“The truth rings out,” Musk added.

He also shared a meme depicting Fauci as the Wormtongue character from Lord of the Rings.

But White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called Musk’s social media remarks “dangerous”.

“These attacks, these personal attacks that we have seen are also dangerous for Dr. Fauci and other public health officials, they are disgusting and they are divorced from reality,” she said during the daily briefing. .

She said the White House would continue to defend Fauci against criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We will continue to speak out against this and be very clear about this, again these are incredibly dangerous personal attacks,” she said.

She reminded reporters that Fauci had served under seven presidents and that Americans were “lucky” to benefit from the “life and exceptional talent” of the polarizing health official.

“That’s what we should be discussing now, that’s what we should be discussing now, that’s what we should be grateful to him for,” she said.

Fauci made headlines over the weekend after taking part in an interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace and talking about the “difficulty” of serving in President Donald Trump’s administration.

“I couldn’t sit there and be complicit in saying hydroxychloroquine works when it doesn’t work, you know, bleach works, it doesn’t work,” he said. “That’s how I evolved into public enemy number one of the far right.”
