NATO allies remain attached to the decision taken at the Washington summit from last year, where they said that the path from Ukraine to adhesion to NATO is irreversible. However, Ukraine has never been promised that NATO membership would be part of a peace agreement.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this at a press conference in Brussels on Friday following a two -day meeting of NATO foreign ministers, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
He made these remarks in response to a question on the question of whether the NATO allies still consider the NATO of Ukraine, in the light of the recent statements of American officials.
“That’s it. We decided in Washington that the path from Ukraine to NATO is irreversible. We build the bridge by everything we do with Ukraine, obtaining Ukraine as interoperable as possible with NATO. But it has never been promised to Ukraine that adhesion to NATO will be part of a peace agreement,” said Rutte.
The United States Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, said earlier than NATO membership in Ukraine was not a realistic perspective. US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said Ukraine’s membership in NATO is unlikely and that such a position is occupied not only by the United States, but also by other NATO members.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described the United States’s refusal to examine NATO membership for Ukraine “a great gift for the Russians”.
