The Vikings of Minnesota acquired a quarter of a quarter during the draft of the NFL 2025, the choice of negotiation n ° 142 at Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Sam Howell and the choice n ° 172.
After spending two seasons with Washington commanders – one of whom saw him start the 17 games and lead the league in passing attempts – Howell spent 2024 as a quarter -rescue with the Seahawks. He appeared in just two games, going 5 for 14 for 24 yards and an interception. During his three -year career, Howell launched 4,139 yards, 22 affected and 23 interceptions on a percentage of completion of 62.6, adding 300 yards on the ground and six affected on the ground.
Howell is now joining a quarter -led by 2024, the recruit of the first round JJ McCarthy, which missed the entire last season with a knee injury. Minnesota also has Rypian Brett on the list.
Earlier this offseason, the Vikings were considered a potential landing point for the veteran Aaron Rodgers, who had “a lot of conversations” with the Vikings coach, Kevin O’Connell, during the offseason, according to the director general of Vikings, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.
Why did the Vikings do this movement?
They had to complement their quarter-rear for weeks. McCarthy is online to be the starter, and the Minnesota had depth, but the Vikings needed another player capable of intervening. This is what Sam Howell provides.
Howell started 18 games in the NFL. He is only 24 years old. One of his best friends, Drake Maye, is close to the current coach of the Vikings Josh McCown quarters. Howell will not threaten McCarthy’s clear path at the start. Its youth also offers an upward advantage for development, which O’Connell is still looking for. His contract also benefits Minnesota.
Howell owes only $ 1.1 million for 2025, much less money than what would have been necessary to add a veteran like Ryan Tannehill. For the moment, it seems that the Vikings have more than enough faith for McCarthy to progress throughout the summer and to the fall and be ready to leave for the training camp. – Alec Lewis, Vikings Beat writer
Does this end the Aaron Rodgers conversation in Minnesota?
Almost certainly. At this stage, only two events would revive this conversation: Rodgers not signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and McCarthy suffering from a reverse.
O’Connell and Rodgers spoke several times when the free agent period began. Rodgers strongly reflects on the situation of the Vikings, and the long -standing relationship of O’Connell with Rodgers has stimulated discussions. In the end, Minnesota opted against the signing of Rodgers at this specific stage.
Rodgers has been free to sign with Pittsburgh for weeks and did not do so. He could choose to wait for the fall and present as a glass break option in an emergency for all the teams needing a veteran on a whim. This Howell decision now, however, puts an end to any current discussion for other candidates, including the former quarter of the Vikings Kirk Cousins who was interested in returning to Minnesota even for an opportunity to safeguard. – Lewis
