‘The View’s Whoopi Goldberg Scolds Donald Trump For Complaining About Half-Staff Flags For Jimmy Carter At His Inauguration: “He Didn’t Intend To Die And Mess Up Your Day”

Whoopi Goldberg gave president elect Donald Trump a reality check on this morning’s episode of The View. While discussing the death of former president Jimmy Carter — who died at age 100 on Dec. 29 — Goldberg scolded Trump for ranting on social media about flags being flown at half-staff around Washington, D.C. in honor of Carter.

Flags will stay lowered for thirty days after Carter’s death, as is custom, meaning they’ll remain that way on Jan. 20, Trump’s inauguration day. This didn’t go over too well with the incumbent president, who expressed his dismay on Truth Social.

“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump wrote, incorrectly using the term for when flags are lowered on a ship, per Reuters.

He continued, “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves,” later writing, “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out.”

Goldberg addressed Trump’s “rant” on this morning’s show, addressing him as “Sir” before pausing to bow her head and put her hand up as if to compose herself. Palms pressed together, she continued, “This was one of our presidents. He didn’t intend to die and mess up your day. That was not a choice. This is what happened.”

As the audience applauded, Goldberg added, “You have to just understand that this is how life works. It ain’t always about you, sir. It ain’t always about you … Let that flag do what it needs to do and celebrate this man’s life.”

Sara Haines shared her own theory about why Trump is so ticked off about the flags, suggesting he knows the visual won’t look so great on Jan. 20, especially considering the millions of Americans who did not cast their vote for him.

While noting “it’s about Jimmy Carter’s passing and that’s tragic,” Haines added, “There are 75 million people who voted for Vice President [Kamala] Harris that may also be mourning when he comes into office, so I think the optics might be really wearing on him.”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
