Three American workers in the United States were dismissed while in myanmar, helping rescue and recovery after the country’s massive earthquake, said an old high-end, while the dismantling of the Trump administration of foreign aid affects its response to the disaster.
After having traveled in the Southeast Asian Nation, the three officials were informed of this week that they would be released, Marcia Wong, former head of the American agency for international development, told Reuters.
“This team works incredibly hard, focused on obtaining humanitarian aid to those who need it. To get news from your imminent termination – how can it not be demoralizing?” said Wong, a former assistant administrator of the USAID humanitarian assistance office, who oversees Washington response efforts abroad.
The government of President Donald Trump has promised at least $ 9 million in Myanmar after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, which killed more than 3,300. But the massive cuts of its administration in Usaid have hindered its ability to respond, while China, Russia, India and other nations have rushed.
The Trump administration has moved to dismiss almost all of the USAID staff in recent weeks, while the government’s Ministry of Elon Musk government has reduced funding and rejected entrepreneurs through federal bureaucracy in what it calls an attack on unnecessary expenses.
The three USAID workers slept in the streets in the earthquake area, said Wong, adding that their endings would take effect in a few months. Residents were sleeping outside for fear of replicas and new construction collapses.
Wong said that she was in contact with the USAID staff and that she had heard of dismissals after a meeting of the whole stadium on Friday. The former USAID staff says that most of the people who would have coordinated the response have been released, while third -party implementation partners have lost contracts.
The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comments. Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected the criticism on Friday that Washington was slow to respond to the earthquake of March 28 because USAID was dismantled.
Rather, he told journalists in Brussels, Myanmar was not “the easiest place to work”, saying that the military government does not like the United States and prevents him from operating in the country as he wishes.
The United Nations said the junta limited humanitarian aid.
Rubio said the United States would no longer be the best humanitarian donor in the world, calling for other rich nations to help Myanmar.
