The US State Department has published a travel notice updated to this popular Caribbean destination due to crime and other factors.
The State Department has re -assembled a “level 2: exercise has increased caution” in the Bahamas due to several factors, including violent crimes, risks of swimming and firearms.
“Most crimes occur in Nassau and Freeport on the new Providence islands and Grand Bahama,” said the Council, especially in the regions where there is gang violence.
The advice also warns travelers to be alerts at any time on vacation rental properties where private security is not always present.
Not only did the State Department warned crime travelers, but it also issued a security warning to swimmers.
“Never swim alone and beware of jet ski or other motorcycle motoromarins near the shore,” said the Council. “Be aware of your environment and stay vigilant in public toilets.”
The update also includes a section on firearms and ammunition in the Bahamas.
It echoes a recent travel warning made for American travelers to the Turkish islands and caicos that those who bring firearms or ammunition to the island may be detained due to laws that prevent firearms and ammunition from entering the island.
For those who decide to travel to the Bahamas, keep these things in mind:
- Do not respond to your door at your hotel or your residence unless you know who it is.
- Locate doors and windows and use other safety features, especially on the doors of the balcony.
- Do not physically resist attempts at theft.
- Carefully check your luggage and hand luggage for ammunition or firearms before leaving the United States because these things are illegal in Bahamas
