The latest series of American air strikes against the Houthie Houthie supported by Iran in Yemen killed dozens of people in bombings targeting a port in the northwest of the country, Houthis said on Friday.
Strikes late Thursday were part of a growing campaign of the Trump administration against the Yemeni militia. The Houthis attacked ships in the neighboring Red Sea and pulled rockets and drones in Israel in a campaign which, according to her, is in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza.
The American bombardment targeted the port of Ras Isa, a major fuel deposit in the province of Hudaydah, controlled by Houthis. At least 74 people were killed and more than 100 others injured, said Anees Al-Asbahi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health managed by the Houthi. The toll could not be checked independently.
President Trump has expanded the efforts of the Biden administration to degrade the Houthis, promising that they will be “completely destroyed”. Since his entry into office, Trump has also tightened American sanctions against the group and has redesigned the militia as a “foreign terrorist organization”.
But the increasingly energetic American strikes on the Houthis have not yet dissuaded to carry out other attacks. Instead, the Houthis said they would host a conflict with the United States, their declared enemy.
Experts also warned that attackers like Ras Isa could worsen the already disastrous conditions in Yemen. The United Nations described the country’s humanitarian crisis as the largest in the world, with around 80% of the population who needs essential aid.
