On Thursday, the Ministry of Justice moved to block the acquisition of Juniper Networks by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the first agreement to be challenged by antitrust officials during the second term of President Trump.
In legal action filed before the United States District Court for the Northern California District, the Government said that the agreement “risked considerably reducing competition in an extremely important technological market”. The agency said the agreement would end a business rivalry in the wireless networking industry that has led to a drop in prices.
The costume came, because many in American companies expected that a lighter touch under Mr. Trump triggers a wave of competitors after four years of difficult control by regulators under former president Joseph R. Biden Jr . But the attempt to stop ceasing to stop the technological agreement suggests that it could be more consistent between the administrations of Biden and Trump on the antitrust application than some had thought.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise, or HPE, a company and corporate service company, announced the juniper takeover of $ 14 billion last year, in the hope of combining its data centers with the activities of Juniper networking to face giants like Cisco.
Regulators in Great Britain and the European Union concluded the agreement this summer. But the antitrust forces of the Biden administration had expressed what is known as a “second request” for more information, indicating a meticulous examination of the transaction.
The prosecution was brought by Omeed ASSEFI, operated by Trump to be the assistant prosecutor general generally of the antitrust division of the Ministry of Justice. Trump’s candidate for the first antitrust role, Gail Slater, is not yet confirmed. Ms. Slater previously worked as a political advisor for vice-president JD Vance and during the first presidential mandate of Mr. Trump. Mr. Vance sometimes completed the efforts of Lina Khan, the president of the Federal Trade Commission of Mr. Biden, and criticized large technological companies as “having too much power”.
