The United Kingdom teases reprisals on American goods – Politico

The British government said that it did not plan for any immediate reprisals at the prices because it has the hope of an economic agreement that would exempt British exporters from functions.

But addressing deputies on Thursday, Reynolds said that the government would consult industry on any reprisals if the United Kingdom would not succeed in obtaining an agreement, describing the decision as a “formal step, necessary for us to keep all options on the table”.

The government did not indicate where it would take prices, asking for their thoughts. But he excluded all tasks on products such as medical supplies and military equipment.

“We will seek the opinions of the British stakeholders over four weeks until May 1, 2025 on products that could potentially be included in any price response in the United Kingdom,” said Reynolds. “This exercise will also give companies the possibility of having a say and influencing the conception of any response to the United Kingdom possible.”

Plans, published on the government’s website, include the possibility of steel, meat, dairy products, plants, automotive parts and certain materials and chemicals. While the less conventional articles on the list include pure breed reproduction horses, fish waste, toilet paper and gloves that are “impregnated, coatings, covered or laminated rubber, knitted or crochet”.

The list of potential tariff objectives marks a gap in the British game plan under the previous Trump administration, when the United Kingdom has transported European Union prices to typically American products such as Jack Daniel’s Bourbon, Levi’s Jeans and Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

If the United Kingdom is able to conclude an economic agreement with the United States which distances the prices, Reynolds said that “the contribution request will be interrupted and that any measure which will result from it will be lifted”.

The Minister was optimistic about the possibility of a sculpture, saying that “an agreement is not only possible, it is favorable to the two countries”, with possibilities of deepening cooperation in “defense, economic security, financial services, machines, technology and regulations”.
